The Plainview Chamber of Commerce is taking nominations for the Man of Woman of the Year awards. The deadline to make a nomination is Feb. 15. Nomination forms are available and can be turned in at the Chamber at 1906 W. 5th St.
The Plainview Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting donations for the annual Educational Mini Grant program for Plainview educators. Donations for the program go toward $150 grants to support classroom projects for local teachers. Those interested in making donations can do so by reaching out to the Chamber at (806)296-7431. The deadline to donate is Feb. 15. The grants are anticipated to be awarded by March 12.
Wayland Baptist University’s Abraham Art Gallery is hosting the West Texas Regional 2021 Scholastic Art Competition exhibit, which features 427 pieces of artwork from students in grades 7 to 12 from across 20 Texas counties. Wayland Baptist University is preparing for its annual Homecoming event, which will be a little different this year. The homecoming@home celebration is set for Feb. 19-20 with most events being virtual. The celebration will include a chapel panel discussion on Feb. 17, sporting events and class reunions. The Floyd County Country Christmas Ball is set for July 17 at the Floyd County Friends Unity Center. The event, which benefits volunteer fire departments in Floydada and Lockney, was rescheduled from December as a result of local COVID-19 activity.
South Plains Church in Levelland is preparing for its 11th Free Wedding Weekends event on March 5 and 6. The event is meant to help couples facing financial struggles. The church will provide everything – service arrangements, floral items, photo services, wedding invites, an MP4 of the ceremony and a three-tier cake provided by United Supermarkets. The Museum of Texas Tech University will host the exhibition, Lubbock Boot Makers: Innovation and Artistry, through the end of January. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is located at 3301 4th St. and is free to the public. Free parking is available. Masks are required and a temperature check and symptoms check will be administered upon entry.
City of Plainview offices will be closed to the public until further notice. Operations will continue but city officials ask that those who can take care of business online or by phone when possible.

First United Methodist Church has set up the Joshua Fowler Fund to help the Fowler family cover some medical expenses. The Plainview native was in a wreck back in May that resulted in several broken bones and a necessity for rehabilitation. The family of six, including four kids under 9 years old, is facing extensive medical debt. Donations can be made at any Centennial Bank location.
The Plainview CARES grant program, a partnership between the City of Plainview, Plainview/Hale County EDC, Plainview Chamber of Commerce and the South Plains Association Governments, has grant funds available for local businesses affected by COVID-19. The grant amounts ranged from $2,500 to $20,000 with the stipulation that they be used for PPE, hand sanitizer, masks, overhead operations, payroll, rent, utilities, inventory and/or other necessary operations costs. Businesses must be in operation for at least one year, must show the negative impact the COVID-19 pandemic has posed for the company and they must be located within Plainview city limits.
It’s more than a year away but tickets are set to go on sale next week for the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas live performance set for Dec. 29, 2021 at The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences in Lubbock. Covenant Health Plainview hosts the cancer survivors prayer support group “We Fight to Live” from 7-8 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month in Room B. The sessions will consist of a monthly topic and presenter, and a structured segment, allowing time for group sharing. The support group is open to those with a cancer diagnosis and anyone affected by their diagnosis. The group is led by Andrea Ingram, a cancer survivor, as well as Sherry Wall, hospital mission services. There is no charge for the group. The Salvation Army of Plainview store is open and seeking volunteers to serve in the processing area. The store is located at 615 Broadway.
(Currently suspended) The Plainview Dance Club hosts dances at First Christian Church in Plainview once a week. Dances are Mondays from 6:30-9 p.m. at the third church off the east service road of Interstate 27. Snacks and live entertainment is available for those interested in joining in dancing and fellowship. No smoking and/or drinking permitted. The event is open to everyone. The Community Foundation of West Texas and the Lubbock Area United Way have created a partnership to form the South Plains COVID-19 Response Fund. The Small Business Association has set up a relief fund for restaurants affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. The Plainview Chamber of Commerce and the Plainview-Hale County Economic Development Corporation have links for additional information for that specific fund and several other resources on their websites.
The Plainview Area United Way and Plainview Area Endowment have established a Disaster Relief Fund to support locals who have been affected by COVID-19. The fund is available to individuals and/or families who need access to food or utility assistance and to nonprofits and small businesses who need support. Plainview citizens are asked to tie their trash bags as the COVID-19 public health emergency continues. The Solid Waste Department also reminds citizens that trash cans are for trash only. Gins around town are marked according to what can be dumped in them. There are green dumpsters available at 2nd St. and Columbia, 4th St. and Floydada and at the 16th Street Park.
