But one particular working day, this stillness was disrupted by a voice singing the catchy melody of a university tune. The voice was sharp, obvious, a little bit off-important, but daring more than enough to rattle the aging household.

The singing belonged to my sister. At first, I treated her singing as almost nothing but a slight inconvenience. But as her volume enhanced, her singing invaded the home and threatened the stillness we experienced earlier enjoyed.

Seeking to liberate the property of this inconvenience, I stormed to my mom, who smiled at filthy dishes beneath her weathered arms. In a tone that I experienced no company working with at my age, I questioned my mother: “Aren’t you likely to stop her singing!? We can barely believe!”  My mom turned to me, smile now gone, and responded, “Paul, you know precisely why I will never prevent your sister from singing.”
