PROVIDENCE, RI — A proposed law would make the possession of a gun unlawful on school grounds. If signed into legislation, only specific regulation enforcement officers could legally be armed.

The bill, released by Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, is named for Sen. Harold Metts, who has very long championed identical actions.

“Guns do not belong in educational facilities, and personal citizens have no business bringing a gun on university house,” Ruggerio reported. “Citizens carrying firearms in educational facilities improves threat, not safety. There have been dozens of illustrations of mishandling and accidental discharge of firearms in colleges throughout our country.”

Less than the bill, only peace officers, retired legislation enforcement officers or an individual underneath agreement as a school security officer could legally have a gun on school grounds.

“We are functioning tricky to strengthen training in our condition,” Ruggerio explained. “The presence of firearms in faculties is harmful to a beneficial studying ecosystem.”

The legislation applies to all college house, like university buses and all home of elementary and secondary schools, equally community and non-public. Exemptions are attainable for firearm instruction or protection programs, governing administration-sponsored military-connected courses these kinds of as ROTC, interscholastic shooting or marksmanship events, army background and firearms selection courses and the use of blank guns utilized in theatrical or athletic situations.
