Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis signs controversial ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill into law
March 28 (UPI) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed into a regulation a controversial measure limiting what can be taught in classrooms on gender id or sexual orientation, dubbed the “Really don’t Say Gay” monthly bill by critics.
Surrounded by the bill’s backers at the Classical Preparatory Faculty in Spring Hill, Fla., DeSantis signed House Invoice 1557, formally identified as the Parental Legal rights in Education invoice.
The new law prohibits classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender id and also bars educators from discouraging or prohibiting “parental notification and involvement in significant selections impacting a student’s mental, psychological, or bodily well-currently being.”
The governor told reporters the measure it is meant to guard the legal rights of dad and mom to defend their small children from “plainly inappropriate” instruction on sexual orientation or gender id.
DeSantis claimed 6 college districts in Florida — which includes the state’s premier — had policies that slice mothers and fathers out of decisions relating to what their small children are taught on the topics.
“In Leon County, Florida, a school excluded dad and mom from conversations about a pupils ‘gender transition,’ a condition for which the district’s superintendent has apologized for and admitted should really never ever have occurred,” he said.
